Watch Out! These Health Food Brands Aren’t so Healthy (And What to Buy Instead)

Consumers want healthy food options. Big brands know this. But consumers also want niche health food brands and choices. So what is a monopoly to do? Create the illusion of choice and the illusion of health, of course!

Sugar for Days

You should probably already be avoiding pre-packaged smoothies because of their sugar content. Too much sugar– even from natural sources like fruit– causes your blood sugar to spike and then crash. Which not only leaves your body feeling less-than-energized, but it also screws up your metabolism. Which can lead to weight gain and eventually diabetes. Sugar is also very taxing for your liver.

Big Brands Duping Consumers

But sometimes we just want something tasty and at least remotely healthy while we’re on-the-go right? Pre-packaged smoothies might have a lot of sugar, but at least you can assume they’re just filled with fruit right? Unfortunately that isn’t the case with these popular brands…

Naked and Odwalla are on the chopping block tonight. These are Pepsi’s and Coca Cola’s “healthy” options. See, Pepsi knew no one would buy a smoothie with the name “Pepsi” printed on the label. So how do you work around this? Just create a new brand to fool consumers into thinking they have a choice.

And the name “Naked” seems so innocent. It implies that there’s nothing in that bottle besides fruit. But once again, this is just all part of the illusion. Pepsi got into trouble last year for slapping Naked drinks with meaningless labels like “all natural” which implies that it’s a healthy option. Samples of the drink have been found to contain unnatural ingredients like fructooligosaccharides, fibersol-2, and inulin. The soda conglomerate also used the term “no sugar added” in an attempt to deceive consumers into thinking their drinks were somehow low-sugar. (They’re not.)
