Dr Bronner’s– everyone’s favorite soap company– released a statement in April announcing their plans to donate $5 to an organization called MAPS for the purpose of getting FDA approval using MDMA for PTSD.

The family-owned maker of the top-selling natural brand of soap, Dr Bronner’s, says they will donate $1 million each year over the next five years to MAPS: the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. MAPS is a  501(c)(3) non-profit organization that focuses on providing research and education about the medical benefits of psychedelics and marijuana.

MAPS studies and carries out assisted therapy trials for a variety of psychoactive substances like ayahuasca, LSD, ibogaine, marijuana, MDMA. As Organic Titanic reported in , MAPS is currently working with the FDA to carry out clinical trials of MDMA for PTSD. MAPS expects the plan to cost around $25 million dollars once all is said and done.

Well fortunately for MAPS and individuals suffering from PTSD, $5 million of that is already covered by Dr Bronner’s. The soap company made the decision after the FDA granted MAPS approval to start phase-3 clinical trials.

“There is tremendous suffering and pain that the responsible integration of MDMA for treatment-resistant PTSD will alleviate and heal,” says David Bronner, Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO) of Dr. Bronner’s.

Since MAPS is a non-profit, they rely on donations. But psychedelic treatments (like MDMA for PTSD) are hard to come by. Given the profit-driven state we live in, what’s to stop MAPS from setting up private clinics and charging exorbitant amounts of money once the drug is approved?

Well, we can’t be sure how much treatments will cost. That part is true. So we can’t be sure what the profit margins will be. But on the other hand, MAPS already promised to train more facilitators and open more centers from any profits generated through future MDMA for PTSD treatment.

“MAPS intends to use the income generated from selling MDMA once it’s an FDA-approved medicine to train therapists and set up treatment clinics around the world,” explains Rick Doblin, Ph.D., founder and Executive Director of MAPS. “Investment into making MDMA a legal medicine will turn MAPS into a self-sustaining organism, exponentially increasing our ability to heal suffering in the world.”
